Ingredient Spotlight: Cinnamon!

The simple spice that is quite nice! Cinnamon, while known to be the perfect addition to your oatmeal, desserts or chai latest, is ALSO wonderful for your health! From helping you to recover from a cold and subduing symptoms of nausea and vomiting, to helping to treat muscle spasms, the potential benefits of this spice far surpass your taste buds!

One of the most astounding benefits of cinnamon is its ability to aid with diabetes in terms of blood glucose control and lipid levels. While studies are still being conducted to support the claim, some have seen that with a cinnamon extract of 112 mg, fasting plasma glucose levels could be lowered. People with diabetes tend to also be at risk for cardiovascular disease associated with their serum lipid levels. Some have seen a reduction in their triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol when consuming cinnamon in some form on a daily basis. As always, exercise and healthy eating is also recommended with both of these claims. New research is now even beginning to link a compound in cinnamon to potentially helping to prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease! This spice truly shows the power of nature!

The versatility of cinnamon is also something to be noted, as it blends beautifully with sweet and savory recipes. Have you ever tried this warm earthy spice in your favorite chili recipe? What about in a rich and creamy butternut squash soup? And of course like most things, cinnamon also pairs perfectly with dark chocolate … like in our Pumpkin Chai Truffles!
