How much fun do you guys have shopping for new fresh local produce at your farmers market? Half the time I’m like I don’t know what to do with this, but it’s colorful, organic and local so let’s just buy it and figure it out! That’s when Google comes in handy to help you find fun and inspiring ideas to create new recipes.
This fresh oregano is certainly not new to any of us but it's a lot more fun (and nourishing) to buy when it’s fresh harvested and you can dry it yourself as opposed to buying it off the spice rack in the grocery store after it's been through transport and sitting on shelves for a long time, causing nutrient loss. For the fresh, I wash it then let it dry naturally on my counter which takes about 4-5 days. Then it’s ready to use in recipes, sprinkle in soups, top on avocado toast or make fresh tea as seen here.
The benefits are ginormous! Oregano has immense immune-enhancing properties and has been shown to fight virus and bacteria-related infections. It’s even been shown to go head-to-head with antibiotics against MRSA. That’s some powerful plant power! Oregano leaves contain more than 40 different phytonutrient compounds including polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins (also found in green tea, dark chocolate and blueberries, respectively). These phytonutrients (or antioxidants) protect against internal and external toxins, fighting diseases like cancer, heart disease and inflammation (which can be traced back to many diseases). Oregano Lemon Tea
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- squeeze of 1/4 lemon
- 12 oz hot water
- Heat water just before a boil.
- Add oregano leaves to tea strainer.
- Add strainer to hot water and steep for 5-7 minutes.
- Pour into your favorite tea mug and add a squeeze of lemon.
- Sip, relax and feel the healing benefits!
